Smoothies to TRY at Home this Summer


Aside from ice creams, frozen yogurts, and other sugar-filled or chocolate-based drinks, let us try a healthy option for us and the kids. Every week, I will share some smoothies and juice recipes that promote health and something that the kids will love as well. For this week, we will start with 2 smoothie recipe that the kids will love and that is easy to make. 

Strawberry Lemonade Recipe

Strawberry Lemonade.  Stephanie Gallagher


INGREDIENTS:
4 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 quart fresh strawberries
1 cup freshly-squeezed lemon juice (about 5-6 lemons)
2 cups cold plain seltzer water or club soda

PREPARATION:
  • Combine water, sugar, strawberries and lemon juice in a blender.Puree until smooth.
  • Pour strawberry lemonade into glasses, filling glasses two-thirds of the way. 
  • Pour seltzer water on top of strawberry lemonade.

Watermelon Smoothie Recipe



INGREDIENTS:
3 cups 1/2-inch chunks of seedless watermelon (the smaller the chunks, the easier it is to blend this watermelon smoothie)
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
3 Tbsp. maple syrup

PREPARATION:

1. Make sure watermelon chunks are fairly small - about 1/2 inch. Cut in half if necessary. This is important, because the smaller the chunks, the easier it will be to blend the smoothie. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Place watermelon on the cookie sheet, leaving space between the pieces. Freeze 1 hour. Or if preparing the watermelon in advance for smoothies later in the week, transfer to a plastic storage bag and freeze until ready to use.

2. Place watermelon chunks in a Vita-Mix Blender (compare prices) or a regular blender.
Top with remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth.
Serve watermelon smoothies immediately. Garnish with fresh mint, if desired.

This is one activity that you and your kids can actually bond with. This is something that you guys can make into a fun activity like creating a map of all the ice cream shop there is and check them off your list one by one every weekend. It's like an ice cream road trip! Don't forget to capture every sweet moment with your kids. They grow up so fast and time is not enough to create memories while they are young.

BRICS is definitely on top my list. Upon entering the door, you can feel the warm and friendly atmosphere that this establishment emits. They are environment-friendly and pet-friendly ice cream shop. There are 24 flavors to choose from and you can also choose from their creations. I suggest the BRIC HOUSE from their creations. It got 3 scoops of ice cream, topped with chocolate chips, hot fudge, crushed oreo's, whip cream, and a cherry. Yum! Also, they give free ice cream to your pet, so no need to leave them in the car.

One of Indy's and one of my favorite ice cream shop here in Indianapolis is Sundae's Homemade Ice Cream. Their award winning ice cream is made of only the best ingredients in the market. Not in the mood for ice cream? They also serve home roasted coffee in their store which you can also order by pound online. I recommend their Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, Pistachio Almond, and Chocolate Amaretto Cheesecake flavors.
