Remodeling our homes is a head hurting and fun experience, however, one of the dilemmas that we all have when we remodel is choosing between to use paint or wallpaper. The pro's and cons of using a wallpaper and choosing paint outweigh the other.
We all have our concerns about using a wallpaper and knowing the materials and the ideal location to place it will help us to maintain the life of our wallpaper and avoid the peeling process sooner than it should be.
Using the wallpaper for our homes isn't just about the design, we should also consider the materials, durability, and part of the home where we are going to place it. This will help us maintain, prevent peeling, and avoid the wallpaper nightmare that we may experience from using the wallpaper.
Wallpaper Materials
There are different types of vinyl wallpapers that are available on the market. The vinyl type of wallpapers is durable, easier to clean, and fire-retardant. There are other types of vinyl materials: solid vinyl, vinyl coated, paper backed vinyl, and fabric backed vinyl. Each has their own particular qualities, and ideal places to be used.
- Solid vinyl - printed on a 100% vinyl material and are commonly embossed to give them a luxurious textural effect. These wallpapers are quite durable and are usually scrubbable, making them easy to clean and maintain. It is waterproof, making it an ideal choice for bathrooms and kitchens where moisture and humidity levels run high. Easy to clean, and holds up well in high traffic areas like children's bedrooms and playrooms. Read more at http://www.ebay.com.
- Vinyl coated - most common type of wallpaper used in homes. The actual wallpaper is made of paper which is coated with a protective layer of acrylic vinyl. This makes the wallcovering scrubbable and easy to clean, as well as resistant to heat, humidity, and grease. This durable wallpaper is recommended for use in high-traffic areas, including kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms, and children's bedrooms. Dirt and crayon marks can be scrubbed without fear of the paper ripping. Read more at http://www.ebay.com.
- Paper Backed Vinyl- It is thicker than many other types of wallcoverings and provides greater durability. It resists moisture and stains, is washable, and can be used in most areas of a house, with the exception of bathrooms with insufficient exhaust fans. Extra care must be taken when installing this type of wallpaper. In rooms that are extremely humid, the paper backing can wick up moisture at the seams, causing the paper and vinyl sheet to separate from each other or delaminate. With long-term or repeated overexposure to humidity, the wallpaper will gradually pull away from the wall and need to be replaced. Read more at http://www.ebay.com.
There is light, medium, and heavy grade duty feature for a vinyl wallpaper.
- Light grade duty- Meant for less heavily used areas where scratching and scuffing are minimal.
- Medium grade duty- Meant for areas where traffic is heavier and the likelihood of scraping and abrasion is fairly high.
- Heavy grade duty- Used primarily in heavily traveled areas by movable equipment.
Flocked Wallpaper
Originally designed to imitate velvet and textile wall coverings, it was made by gluing a powdery by-product of wool to fabric, producing a velvety, luxurious effect.
This wallpaper is not washable, so the room it is used in should be chosen wisely. Flocked wallpaper is commonly used in a formal area of the home such as the dining room and the living room. Read more at http://www.ebay.com.

Foil Wallpaper

Foil wallpaper is created by applying a thin sheet of metallic foil to a paper backing. The foil comes in a range of plain colors, the most popular being gold, silver, and copper. Wallpapers produced in a single metallic color can have a dull sheen or a bright reflective surface. Foil wallcoverings are also available with patterns similar to traditional wallpapers, but the design is screen-printed onto the surface so it will not soften when it becomes wet. In addition, foil wallpaper comes in textured finishes. The surface of the foil is textured with pigmented dyes that give the effect of marble. The nature of this technique means that the pattern never repeats itself and so cannot be matched. Some types of foil can be polished with a dry cloth to maintain their sheen.
