Indy with Kids: 5 places to enjoy the fall nights
By:Katy Mann, Star correspondent Source: http://www.indystar.com
One of the things I love doing when I was a kid is camping. Times where different then, we don't have all the gadgets or any electronic stuff before. If there is one or few days that you can have your kids stay away from their gaming consoles, this is it!
Mingle with other kids and parents, let them have the best time and bond with your family, enjoy the fall season under the stars, make some s'mores, grill hot dogs and some tell spooky stories around the campfire!
Here are the 5 places to enjoy the fall nights with your kids.
Play Time
Family Friday at Grand Park (711 E. 191st St., Westfield) is a free event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2. Bring your own equipment to play on the fields. Special activities will taking place and a DJ will play music for dancing and enjoyment. Bring a picnic dinner or purchase concessions. (Park in Lot C.)
Go Camping
The Family Camp-Out at McCloud Nature Park (8518 Hughes Road, North Salem) on Oct. 3 will let families enjoy the camping experience close to home. Group activities including hikes, games, campfire stories and sky viewing with telescopes are planned, but participants are welcome to enjoy the park on their own. A $30 per site fee (max. six people) includes s’mores and breakfast. Info and registration: hendrickscountyparks.org
Gather ‘round the campfire
From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 28, Simon Moon Park (2728 E 171st St., Westfield) will offer campfires featuring bedtime stories, sing-along songs, crafts and s’mores. Info: westfield.in.gov
Roasting sticks and marshmallows will be provided at Holliday Park (6363 Spring Mill Road) for its Family Campfire from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 6. Attendees are welcome to bring their own hotdogs for roasting or ingredients to make s'mores. Learn about the inhabitants of Holliday Park and then embark on a hike. Registration is $5 per person and must be done in advance: (317) 327-7180.
Friday Night Hoots Hike and Owl Discovery programs at Eagle Creek Park
(7840 W 56th St.) lets participants see owls up close, dissect an owl
pellet and take a hike to listen and look for owls. Registration is $8
per person and must be done in advance. Parking is $5 for Marion County
residents. This event takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 16 and 5
to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Info: (317) 327-7148.
Meet Forest Creatures
During Hauntless Halloween at Holliday Park
(6363 Spring Mill Road) from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15-17, families embark
on a 30-minute night hike into the forest where they meet with forest
creatures that speak to participants about their lives, homes and
habits. Admission is $6 for children and $8 for adults, and includes
