7 Ways to Distress and Recharge after the Holidays when in Indy

7 Ways to Distress and Recharge when in Indy

Holidays can be stressful and feeling drained from all the preparation from the holidays. Destressing doesn't always have to involve the spa or getting a massage, it's expected that the massage parlors will be full for the first week.  Here are some ways you can get yourself recharged.

7 ways to relax and recharge in Indy from holiday stress

Take a hike

We’ve been enjoying an incredibly mild winter so far — use that to your advantage. Take an afternoon off from errands and go for a hike at Eagle Creek Park or take a jog or bike ride along the Monon Trail .

The fresh air and quiet of nature will provide a much-welcome break from the lights, colors and music of the holidays. Pro tip: If you haven’t finished gift-shopping, plan this excursion after a trip to the mall. You’ll need it.

No time to make a nature excursion? Take the dog for a long walk around the neighborhood. He’ll love you for it, and the physical activity will do you good.

Yoga

Even if you’re not a yoga person, this practice forces you to take deep breaths and clear your mind of everything that’s stressing you out. For that one hour, you’ll be so busy focusing on your physical and mental well-being that you’ll forget to worry about everything else on your plate.

Most studios have drop-in rates so you can try a class without making a commitment. Look for words like “restorative,” “gentle” or “mindful” in the class titles to find programs that will be best for stress relief.

CityYoga, 2442 Central Ave., offers Stress Relief Yoga on Mondays at 5:45 p.m. or Sundays at 6:30 p.m., and Gentle Yoga at 1:30 pm on Thursdays. Those recovering from addiction, for whom the holiday season can be especially trying, might try Yoga for Recovery at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Have a laugh

They say laughter is the best medicine, and when it comes to stress, that’s probably more true than ever.

This weekend, catch a funny holiday program at one of our fine local theaters. Theatre on the Square, 627 Massachusetts Ave., has a production of the beloved classic “A Christmas Story,” as well as a more irreverent “8 Reindeer Monologues” if you’re craving some adult humor. Both shows run through Dec. 20.

Phoenix Theatre’s, 749 N. Park Ave., annual holiday show, “A Very Phoenix Xmas X: O Come, Let Us Adore Us,” also runs through Dec. 20. It pokes fun at some of the traditions — and traditional conflicts — that drive us all a little crazy this time of year. Aside from being a fun distraction, it will remind you to not take it all too seriously.
