With off-beat ice cream flavors like Cedar and Whiskey or Balsamic Dark Chocolate, Lick is hardly the average ice cream company. No surprise then that the Indy company’s new tasting room is a little off the grid.

Finding Lick’s new digs, the company’s first retail location, in the Circle City Industrial Complex on the Near Eastside is a bit like walking a maze. Don’t give up until you reach the end. That’s where Lick dips new flavors like Caramel and Mulling Spices, a spicy, silky, toasty blend containing homemade caramel sauce that instantly evokes a holiday state of mind.

Try the various artisan, from-scratch flavors in cups, cones and cream soda or root beer floats during a 5 to 8 p.m. First Friday celebration Nov. 6. Buy take-away containers, too. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 4-6, but call ahead (317-979-0237) after those dates, as hours will depend on demand.

The rambling Circle City Industrial Complex, 1125 Brookside Ave., covers four blocks between Massachusetts and Brookside avenues.
When searching for Lick, look for Circle City Industrial Complex’s main entrance along Brookside Avenue. It’s marked by sign in the shape of a large silver gear outlined in red and containing the moniker “CCIC Indy-Made.” Plenty of parking is available in a huge lot across the street.
Once inside the complex, wind right and then left in search of Suite C7B. Along the way, you’ll see a paper sign directing you to Lick.
Don’t expect rainbow stripes and dancing cows painted on the walls. Lick’s understated aesthetic mixes muted blues, grays and vanillas, with hints of lime on the chalkboard menu. A small cooler holds Lick flavors. Waffle cones are made fresh. A couple of plain, wooden stools stand by a light table displaying vintage ice cream scoops.
